Upset Stomach and Stress: Is There a Connection?

Under normal circumstances, when we have an upset stomach, or some people call it stomach trouble (those times when we could feel and hear our stomachs rumbling; or when the need to visit the comfort room becomes intense and more frequent), we often blame it to the food we’ve eaten or the drink we’ve taken in.

But what if they’re not the real culprit?

Medical experts are saying that another possible cause for an upset stomach is stress.

In many studies, the clear connection between the stomach and the brain has been established, and in these studies, it has been found that stress can really make any digestive symptoms worse.

How does this happen?

When a person is stressed and/or is anxious, he swallows more air – and air in the stomach causes it to be bloated.

Some people may also be suffering from IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome which is found to be directly related to stress.

When a person is under excessive emotional stress, what happens is that there begins to happen an increase in hydrochloric acid in the intestinal tract and stomach. The increase in stomach acid causes the production of gas in the intestine, which eventually leads to bloating.

So what can be done to remedy this situation?

The answer is simple: Laugh more!

Laughing is said to reduce stomach acid and gas, and laughing is also a great stress reliever.
