Why I Love to Live in Cagayan de Oro
Well, first of all, because it’s urbanized yet still rural in some ways. Where we live, the air is still cool and clean.
It’s also not very expensive to live in Cagayan de Oro City as compared to living in Cebu orManila.
Food is still affordable, especially if you know where to buy cheap groceries, vegetables, fish, and meat. For example, if you want fresh and affordable fish, just go to Bulua where the West-Bound Terminal is. If you go there early enough, around 4:30 to 5:00 in the morning, you will find the fish landing and bandera’s of fresh fish sold at a much lower price. For fresh vegetables, you can go to Agora market and buy from wholesalers, or you can go to Osmeña Street at dawn and buy direct from the wholesalers.
For groceries, the cheapest places are La Victoria Grocery in Cogon Market, Kevin Marketing, Palaña Grocers (also in Cogon Market), to name a few. These stores, however, are always full, and the spaces between gondolas or aisles are so narrow and the lines to the cashier are very long – so if you have agoraphobia or if you are claustrophobic, better not go there. Ororama is a good choice, also Savemore in Capistrano and Kauswagan.
People in Cagayan de Oro are fashionable. One can find in Malls high-end boutiques that sell absurdly expensive clothes, but if one wants the cheaper version, there’s always the ukay ukay Monday to Sunday in Cogon Market or during the Night Café Friday and Saturday evenings! In these tiangge’s it’s always a delight to find and buy branded clothes for one hundred, more, or less.
There are a lot of fast-food chains in Cagayan de Oro, and you can easily find them in Malls, in Department Stores, in street corners near educational institutions and government offices. Jollibee, McDonald’s, KFC, Greenwich, Chowking, Mang Inasal, Red Ribbon, Dunkin Donuts, Mister Donut, and Goldilocks.
Cagayan de Oro is not complicated, except for the rerouting now due to the construction of the fly-overs in Macanhan and CM Recto & Licoan Junction. Most jeepneys pass by Cogon Market, so you’ll always find your way in case you get lost in the City.
Higher Educational Institutions are also aplenty in Cagayan de Oro. The City has a State University that specializes in Science and Technology (MUST). CdO also has numerous Universities that offer the best nursing courses in Mindanao (XU, CU, Liceo,Lourdes, COC-Phinma, and STI); a medical school (XU Jose Rizal College of Medicine); and Law Schools (XU and Liceo). Very lately, Culinary Schools have also sprouted in the City.
What else do I love in Cagayan de Oro?
Maybe some other time I’ll write my other reasons …
For now, it’s bedtime for me! Besides, there’s a book I have to finish reading – Mockingjay!
